Redesign of the combustion cylinders and fuel injection
system could allow diesel fuel to burn in a similar way to
petrol when a spark ignites it. The aim is to obtain combustion
across the whole cylinder volume in a short time rather than
the prolonged burning that diesel engines usually have. Several
researchers have shown this to reduce NOx and other pollutants
but it is very hard to achieve in practice and is still at
a research stage.
