The vast majority of advances taking place in the engine industry at present are emissions regulations related. Most diesel manufacturers are looking for ways of reducing emissions steadily in line with the various worldwide requirements, while maintaining or improving fuel consumption, power density and reliability.

Many of the changes being proposed present the turbocharger, along with parts of the rest of the engine, with challenges to operational limits or current designs.
